That last one . I'm sure is the keeper Col. Wish India had more leaders like Field Marshal Sam Manickshaw.
ReplyDeleteWe do. Have leaders like SMS. But that is when they are young officers in the military. Over time, they see for themselves what works in getting ahead is a cocktail of traits, not all liked to leadership and military acumen. And disilusionment snd frustration follows.
ReplyDeleteIts not too diffiucult to infer from here that we need to implement the reports on military reforms, we need to bring up pay scales, we need to remove manpower and equipment shortages that will allow many benefits apart from projecting direct military strength....like will allow junior officers to permit jawans (the army backbone) to go on leave in a satisfactory manner, leading to less shootings (which make for much hooha in today's rabid and unidimensional media). The list goes on.
Actually this manpower and equipment/facilities shortage is much the story of the rest of India - police, firemen, courts, judges, even beurocracy. Ironical for a country with 1+ billion people, that too when literacy levels are rising. Clearly our political leaders dont get it.
Great man!!!salute!!!
ReplyDeleteCol,
ReplyDeleteIts a pity the way we treat our heroes other than politicians. Why not Bharat Ratna to Sam?
A grand lover of life. Lived with Panache & Flair!
