Their research component is nix...DRDO is not DARPA. Their research component is nix, the development aspect is merely patchwork / integration of assemblies imported from a foreign supplier. I would credit them with limited utility even if they merely reverse-engineered foreign munition and equipment designs. But the DRDO bleeds the National exchequer of precious funds which go into funding foreign jaunts and establishment costs with little R&D to show. The Defence PSUs are no better and the Ordnance factories are the pits.

Let's not fool ourselves - the Arjun is not a R&D product; apart from its gun article, there's nothing Indian on it.

Unfortunately the same people are recycled between Govt-employment as DRDO, military, OFB staff and their second-innings in the private sector (defence).

It's a vicious cycle.Gabbarnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8726844009873922462.post-38708708587196966482013-05-29T22:19:14.977-07:002013-05-29T22:19:14.977-07:00Now MOD issuing tender for 100 APCs which in all l...Now MOD issuing tender for 100 APCs which in all likelihood is going to be purchased from abroad. They shall not seek tech from foreign firms because what they'll eventually get shall be dated, and that shall also be a threat to DRDO's products.

2) They shall NOT communicate to armed forces brass directly. All communication must be routed through DRDO. This is to prevent corruption in the armed forces.

3) They must license produce at least one "big ticket" item from DRDO, such as Tejas, Arjun, submarine parts, choppers, etc. Foreign products can be licensed only if they have been approved for purchase by any of the armed forces. They should not needlessly enter JVs with foreign firms.Abhimannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8726844009873922462.post-26621987543946781622013-05-28T23:21:58.351-07:002013-05-28T23:21:58.351-07:00Asking users for justifying source of procurement ...Asking users for justifying source of procurement is flawed. The role of users in the procurement process is limited to testing the equipment (Technical & User trials) with a view to see whether it meets the GSQR. If the requirements are not met there should be no pressure on the armed forces to accept it just because it is indigenous (DRDO, DPSU).

The article gives an impression that the responsibility of equipping our armed forces with the best that is available in the world is that of the users only. The nation (DRDO & MoD) has no role to play. As they say there are is no runners-up trophy in war.

Mr. Antony says our armed forces are the best in the world. The Army Chief says that he does not have enough artillery, tank ammunition and night fighting capabilities to engage in war. It is true that our soldiers are blind at night. Most of the battle engagements will be during hours of darkness and limited visibility.

I do not know who should be held responsible for keeping our soldiers ill equipped, ill fed and with low morale for all these years. We should thank God that a war was not thrust upon us since 1971. let us also not forget to thank our neighbors for sparing us the ignominy and embarrassment of taking them on with equipment and weapons that are of second world war vintage. All these are towed, what about the wheeled or tracked howitzers SPH of which Bhim was a type.

BTW whats the difference between a artillery and howitzers?

Thanks

Joydeep Ghosh
joydeep ghoshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00038225081192821456noreply@blogger.com
