Here's a quiz for the uniformly well-informed readers of Broadsword. Best, second-best and third-best answers get a Platinum, Gold and Silver star respectively.

And, of course, there is the Wooden Spoon...

  6. Dear Ajay,

Very difficult to say what they are doing. here is my educated guess:-
    • Figuring out how to fit 4 multiple warheads without increasing diameter of the missile.

    • Trying to shift the control surfaces to balance a longer (20m) missile.

    • Rework control electronics to feed multiple target data in to the sub warheads.

    • Working on the stage separation valves which can be seen in the picture.

  7. 1. Its in the process of integration of the various segments of the missile.
    2. Happening of Integration in DRDO..

  8. The Agni-6 ICBM has been tainted by stories of "parts swapping" - parts that were meant to be with Agni-5 has been swapped with parts to be used on 6, etc. The MoD has suspended the program until a full investigation is done.

In the picture above some DRDO people are trying to figure out how to attach all the missle sections together - It will not fly in pieces.

Cujo - going for the wooden spoon...

  9. Agni-6: DRDO is awaiting govt approval.

  10. Agni 6 has a range of more than 10000 kms compared to what has been stated as 6000 kms...All of Indian missiles ranges are described in miles instead of kms...Convert Agni 5's 5000 miles to kms and you get China's description of Agni 5 range as 8000 kms...

Agni 6 is in the advanced stage of development with 2 versions; Agni 6 as ICBM and K-6 as SLBM...

But I have no idea what the picture is about as I am not a defence personnel. As a wild guess, may be the canister is getting developed for Agni 6....

  11. Hi,

There is no such approved programme as Agni 6, Agni series stands from 1 to 5 only, any longer range missile or even the long range SLBM will be a completely new system and would not be based on Agni platform.

    Agni 5 being assembled above.

  12. 1. Agni-6 is Agni-5 with MIRV capability, and probably all stage composite motors.

    2. The payload interface area of Agni section being looked at.

  13. Modifying for launching micro sats or to use a a target missile for next stage of BMD.

  14. Towards left of the picture is composite casing appx. 2m diameter comparing it with height of people standing there (could be for A3, A5 or A6).

On the floor you can see interstage.

The people are working on payload adapter most probably version of A2. It is definately not MIRV/MaRV 3rd stage motor.

  15. The scientists and technicians are trying to figure out something about this missile in development. I believe Agni 6 blueprints were ready long back and could have been tested a lot earlier but bcoz of political or diplomatic reasons India has kept it a secret. I guess India might already have developed the Surya missile which is believed to be the longest range missile available in its inventory

  16. 1) As revealed in a DRDO newsletter in 2012, Agni-6 will be an ICBM with a range in between 6,000-10,000 km and will be capable of underwater launch with MIRV.
But I don't know the current status of the program
    2) The structure on the right might be a gas generator which ejects the missile from canister.
The structure on the Left is marked RIR which could mean it is part of assembly for the Range Instrumentation Radar for the missile.

  17. agni 6 is agni 5 with MIRV + little more range.
The picture shows the MIRV cone getting assembled.

  18. Agni 6 will have MIRV as the only new feature (and of-course some improve electronics and design to felicitated MIRV capability). The range will remain the same or less.

The picture is showing assembly of agni V or IV for coming test.

  19. Agni-6 will be suppressed. the Indian Govt. is way too compromised and penetrated for this system to be operationalized.

    ReplyDelete
  20. From picture it seems Agni-6 is a modification of Agni-4 or similar to Agni-4 than Agni-5. It probably adds a composite third stage to increase range. In that case it may not have MIRV. Interesting...

  22. The guy in the green shirt is saying "I am no rocket scientist...I'm the pilot where do I sit" the guy in the blue shirt is trying to figure out where to fit the roti maker.

Going for wooden spoon...Whatever it is I hope that it adds to deterrence like the other Agni's.....good work DRDO (wish the other parts DRDO & Ordance board were as good as the missle section).

  27. Agni VI is getting assembled. The scaffold ring stage that is normally present in Agni missiles can be seen on the bottom right corner. The diameter looks to be around 1.5 mts. The section of the missile facing the camera looks to be part of the ring gyro inertial navigation system.

  28. They've decided to try covering the missile with a blue cloth to enable it to sustain higher re-entry temperatures that accompany longer range.

  29. Answers,
1.)There is no such thing called AGNI-6,it is the AGNI-5 which later configured for MIRV warhead.
    2.)It's AGNI-2. On the left,warhead cone,payload adapter and 2nd stage.
On the right,1st stage and interstage connector.

  31. So what's the answer?

  32. About Agni 6 it is now capped at 6000-8000 KM range b-coz Big Dady got furious, the moment they came to know about DRDO secretly going ahead to develop the 10,000 + KM Agni 6 (aka Surya). PMO and Cab Secretariat faced the Big Dady's fire and result was ..it was decided not to extend the term for Sri V K Saraswat.
He also vehemently opposed to buy Patriot System (another strategic dependency ) and hence Big Dady's men(who are educated in Big Dady's universities) in ruling party and in our Cabinet ..some how managed to convince Mr.Anthony and separate VKS from the Active duty of DRDO, after giving him a national award.

Image is(considering the Dia) either payload section of Agni-4 or PAD.

  33. 1) Agni 6 is sea launched ICBM.
    2) Integration work of Agni 4 Components

  35. DODOs are trying to figure out how to claim more money !!

  36. 1) Agni-6 is a draft project for a more powerful MIRVed missile (range of 6000+ km for 4-6 warheads) than Agni-V. It has however, not received political sanction as of now (will it get sanction from the current govt. or similar govts is a good question).

2). Sections of a missile of lower did. than Agni-3/5 are being assembled. The last section looks like the head of a PAD.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't know about the Agni 6, but the image probably isn't the same... I'd put my money it being the stages of the PDV ABM interceptor missile. The whole A-6 angle is a bit of a red herring, I think.

  41. Agni is the God of fire and the acceptor of sacrifices. The sacrifices made to Agni go to the deities because Agni is also a messenger from and to the other Gods. He is ever-young, because the fire is re-lit every day. He is a link between heaven and earth. He is associated with Vedic sacrifice, taking offerings to the other world in his fire.

Before you start juxtapositioning the role of Agni the deity with Agni the missile let me warn you that this is not always true.

How will you explain that one of the roles of Agni is to stand as a key witness to all marriages! A Missile even if an ICBM cannot be assigned such a role. And that is the problem to which our team of scientist from DRDO are trying to find an answer in the given photograph.

  48. Agni-6 will be the primary Submarine launched version of ICBM. It most probably would be around 40 Tonnes, 12.0 -12.2 meters long and with 2.0 meter of diameter. This 3 stage missile will be all composite and have range of 9000-11000 Kms. However publically the DRDO will claim the missile to be IRBM with range of around 6500 Kms. This MIRVed missile will be the ultimate carrier of nuclear arsenal in the future nuclear subs. The land and rail mobile version will also be made available for the strategic forces.
