Broadsword quiz: what is that?

Here's something to occupy yourselves with this weekend! What is this structure? Where is it? What does it do?

I never said this would be easy!

Best answer wins. If the factual route doesn't work, you're welcome to try the wisecrack route... but the track record of wisecrackers has not been good on Broadsword quizes!!

the board with the letters 'VTF',i think it would have been funny if it was 'WTF',you know what i mean.
any way sticking to the topic, i think it is some kind of testing chamber, may be for engines of missiles, since your previous article was on missile, i think that this photo was taken in the missile testing complex.

surely it's not for bungee jumping or is it?

It is remotely operated vertical test facility to test rocket engines.

VTF name board gives it away.

The Vertical Test Facility was indigenously designed and developed to test LP engines. The control panel of this facility is electrically controlled from a remote location. This facility is used for testing the propulsion stages to prove the functional integrity.

From DRDO's website.

A trial facility for testing canistarised Agni 5 ?

Stand alone Liquid propulsion engine vertical testing facility. Since its enclosed and with all those Helium or Nitrogen gas storage, I am guessing its a high altitude test facility.
Notice that its located in a remote location with a hill behind so just in case if things go wrong.

This is a structure in DRDL Hyderabad. I know it because i live near DRDL, Hyderabad and it is visible by roadside.

I think it is used for testing canister launching of missiles which is evident by the cylinders present at the bottom level.

my 1st guess is that it is a mining shaft. My other guesses would be access to some underground storage for bombs or missiles.

VTF and the pillar like shape suggests an Vertical Take off or Test facility for missiles or rockets.

Cylinders on ground also suggest this.

It could also be test facility for canister based missiles.

I choose the harder of the two paths - the wisecrack path.

Is it the new multi-level outdoor toilet developed by DRDO? This particular picture shows the Vanity Testing Facility (VTF).

The IAF should be chastised for not equiping the jags with auto[pilots , this just simple logic. There is a talk of making the jag a fly by wire ac is it possible? the one bae made had stakes in front. It also claims in a blog that harm missiles will be integrated as well as the aasm, , all true?

Cars are parked near the facility. Seems like that would be safety hazard. Not sure if this is related to any kind of testing. Is this just a show piece / prototype of an actual testing facility?

I will second this. If memory serves right, this was on the National Geographic Mission Navy.

How come no one is noticing that there are vehicles parked around and trees so close by, how can this be a engine test facility

Anonymous said...

Interestingly, if you go by the name on the platform and http://drdo.gov.in/drdo/labs/DRDL/English/index.jsp?pg=facility.jsp it looks like a engine test facility, but this is odd with all those trees around.

OKAY, HERE'S THE ANSWER: THIS IS THE VERTICAL TEST FACILITY THAT WAS BUILT IN THE 1970s TO TEST THE LIQUID FUELLED DEVIL MISSILE... A LIQUID FUELLED MISSILE THAT WAS MODELED ON THE SOVIET SA-2.

WHILE THIS WAS NOT A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT, IT LED TO THE THEN FLEDGLING DRDL ACCUMULATING SEVERAL IMPORTANT CAPABILITIES... WHICH HAVE FED INTO THE CURRENT GENERATION OF MISSILES.

THE DEVIL'S ENGINE, AS ALSO THOSE OF OTHER MISSILES OF THAT GENERATION, USED TO BE GROUND TESTED IN THIS FACILITY.

NO GOLD STARS FOR CORRECT ANSWERS BECAUSE IT SEEMS MOST OF THEM HAVE COME FROM GOOGLING 'VTF'. I SHOULD HAVE OBLITERATED THAT, SO THE FAULT IS REALLY MINE.

NO WISECRACK AWARDS FOR "WTF". IT WAS TOO OBVIOUS!

WISECRACK AWARD No 1: FOR "ANONYMOUS", 9TH SEPT 16:31... for his answer: NEW MULTI-LEVEL OUTDOOR TOILET DEVELOPED BY DRDO... THIS IS THE VANITY TEST FACILITY (VTF).

WISECRACK AWARD No 2: FOR "ANONYMOUS", 9TH SEPT 00:11... GALLOWS FOR HANGING KASAB!

Thanks Ajai

To the Folks here , You can see similar facility but in latest avatar in ISRO LPSC Mahendragiri near Nagercoil.

As some one said here surrounded by hills to minimize the impact of any accidental blasts

I remember somewhere in early 2000's reading a news item in local vernacular press a Israel tourist was attracted by tower among hills and tried to get through the hills to find out
