It is some sort of a oceanographic survey vessel. My guess, it is most probably the INS Sagardhwanee. The one that is used to test advanced torpedo designs and R&D into advanced sensor systems.

Well, I was above to say stern trawler which is used to cash fish with a trawling speed of 4 to 5 knots (seeing the frame at the stern), but then seeing it is a Coast Guard/IN boat, I guess it does tow /dunk some equipment from the stern. Probably some kind of oceanographic /minesweeper / some sonar array towing vessel that drags it in a line behind the vessel.

well it is the INS Sagardhwani. It is used as a research vessel for various fields ranging from acoustic, geological, meteorological, chemical and physical oceanography in the eight labs of the ship and is also used to test torpedoes !!!!

(google and wiki FTW).

Unsure on the name of this ship, however this is a mine sweeper, used to clear the waters of any anti ship mines and make way for the fleet ships.

It's INS Sagardhwani, a research vessel with the NPOL. Research from different areas such as acoustic, oceanography, geological are conducted. Also testbed for advanced torpedos.

I guess everything has been said except that its built by GRSE.

It also has other things to do with submarines..not torpedos ;)

It looks like a research ship, so I looked at Bharat-rakshak.com and this what I think it is: It's Sagardhwani A74 (A research ship). "The vessel has been configured as a research vessel for this Naval Physical and Oceanographic Lavoratory, Kochi". This ship has 8 laboratories "to permit conducting acoustic, geologival, meteorological, chemical and phusical oceanograohy". This ship was "employed in acvance torpedo trials and missile range support". Thanks to BR.com and their contributors for all the information stored on that website.

You tried hard to Remove the name but forgot to remove the A-74 number...which makes it quite easy to search. It is "INS Sagardhwani"

This is an Indian Navy combat trawler INS Sagardhwani. It has the ability to catch 20 tonnes of fish under battle conditions to feed the saliors on ships that are on the move.

But what makes this particular ship different and perhaps the quiz more challenging is that it is also equipped to combat heavily armed fish and capture them for consumption later.

Cujo - strikes again !

I guess it is a pirate mother ship, hijacked by Somalia pirates and Indian Navy is rescuing the hostages

It's a navy ship and it does defence things. Like sink.

PS Shouldn't we be providing drinking water and electricity for our poor rather than spending it on such battleships? Arundhati Roy may have a point.

Seems like a ship for ROV opearation, example submarine rescue activity. Could be a modified ship.

I base my answere on location of cranes and the pulley assembly at Aft end.

@Jholawala

Excellent point !!!

By the way, have you paid your taxes fully or found loopholes and avoided it ?

Instead of asking Indian Govt (which you think is not hearing your pleas), why can't you initiative and give drinking water and food those people....

Everyone is doing google searches or wikipedia searches on A 74 and have come up with the answer INS Sagardhwani.

Now what if people came to know that the A 74 written on the side of the ship is photoshopped hain?

Some idiot has posted a comment that the ship is a fishing trawler for defence canteens.

Ajai, can you write a article on the officer's mess and amenities ? I guess you can write a book on your defence experience and dealing with defence ministry from outside (of defence forces).
